Fatigue

Experiencing fatigue can be transient or constant and vary in intensity.

Fatigue is a common yet complex medical symptom defined by a persistent sense of physical, emotional, or mental exhaustion that is not relieved by rest or sleep. Unlike typical tiredness, fatigue often points to an underlying health condition. Its causes can range from lifestyle factors—such as poor sleep, inadequate nutrition, and chronic stress—to medical conditions like anemia, hypothyroidism, diabetes, and sleep disorders. Mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, are also major contributors. In more severe cases, fatigue may signal chronic illnesses such as autoimmune disorders or cancer. Identifying the root cause is essential for effective treatment and long-term management.

One particularly challenging condition is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). This disorder is characterized by profound, long-lasting fatigue that persists for more than six months and worsens with physical or mental activity. Individuals with CFS may also experience unrefreshing sleep, cognitive difficulties ("brain fog"), and post-exertional malaise. Because fatigue can result from a variety of overlapping factors, proper evaluation usually includes a detailed medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic testing. Treatment focuses on addressing the root cause and may include lifestyle changes, medical therapy, and psychological support. Addressing fatigue early can greatly improve quality of life and prevent further complications.
